The Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) has a fast-growing transportation network, including highways, bridges, transit, and strategic corridors in Ontario, Canada. After completing hardware upgrades in 2020, MTO recognized the need to upgrade its on-site IT infrastructure, which includes overseeing the physical computing resources and ensuring server maintenance, data storage, and network connectivity. In addition, MTO’s field operational technology (OT) network also requires continuous monitoring and device maintenance to relay real-time data about traffic and road safety. With a goal of ensuring network reliability and improving cybersecurity and future readiness, MTO sought a partner to implement solutions to support the management of its IT and OT systems.
Arcadis' Networking and Cybersecurity Engineering team completed an assessment of MTO’s current IT and OT systems to determine the most appropriate management systems to develop and implement to ensure a safe, reliable network.
Our solutions included antivirus software for malware removal; endpoint detection and response systems to monitor and address risks; next-generation antivirus software to block advanced threats; protection platforms for integrating antivirus software, firewall, and intrusion prevention software; and mobile device management systems to secure and manage network access.
We deployed software agents on virtual machines (VMs) to oversee activities, detect threats, and provide centralized management and control. This real-time feedback allows administrators to configure policies, monitor alerts, and promptly respond to security incidents.
Our team also held training and awareness programs to update employees about best practices to enhance overall protection.
For field OT networks, we performed updates on more than 1,000 network field switches and integrated centralized services throughout the entire network. Security measures included address filtering and authentication; shutting down unused ports on switches; and maintaining asset management processes for in-depth network monitoring and safety. All these measures ensure that MTO’s systems are secure and in good working order.
We developed powerful security measures in MTO’s core and field networks, including robust patch management for firmware updates, stringent access controls for data integrity, centralized services for secure connectivity, and a comprehensive network monitoring system. Through this approach, our team fully integrated network management systems with zero downtime, resulting in a seamless transition.
Our dynamic cybersecurity management system protects our client from current and future threats, enabling us to build a stronger relationship by providing them with IT and OT consulting and managed services, leading to operationally efficient and safer transportation systems in Ontario.
