To address the project’s complexity, Arcadis sought the help of its global experts who have wealth of experience in the development of healthcare facilities.
By tailoring our solutions to the project, we were able to implement a design the responds to the needs of the healthcare professionals and their patients.

Despite its size and desert environment, Qatar is one of the most attractive places for expatriates, and they have been driving the country’s population upward for years. Qatar developed an ambitious masterplan to increase healthcare capacity by building new hospitals, clinics and research facilities. However, building hospitals can be as complicated as the medical procedures that happen within their walls especially if you are building one of the largest healthcare developments in the Middle East.
A lot goes into hospital construction — it’s more of a service design than a physical design. Qatar’s principal public healthcare provider, Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), appointed Arcadis to provide project, program and design management services for the construction of Hamad bin Khalifa Medical City campus which was the largest capital project commissioned by HMC at the time. We also handled the operational commissioning of the project to ensure that the facilities were fully ready for use when they opened to the public. In order to ensure compliance with the technical requirements of a healthcare facility as well as international best practice, we formed a team of experts with an in-depth understanding of the global healthcare sector. This helped us incorporate the latest trends in clinical service planning, medical equipment planning and hospital design. We also sought the close participation of government stakeholders including the Public Works Authority and the Ministry of Public Health to make sure that the project would be completed as intended.
The Medical City is a state-of-the-art healthcare complex that boasts not only impressive physical attributes but also provides the people of Qatar with immediate and world-class patient care. The design we implemented helps in the efficient flow of patients and staff, safe conduct of operations across all areas, and lowered the risks of patient injury.
