The challenge

UT Southwestern (UTSW) Medical Center, the #1 hospital in Texas and Top 20 in the US, was under pressure to meet an increasing demand in specialty patient care in North Texas. To address this, it decided to expand and introduce the William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital, a space designed with care and the comfort of patients in mind.

As UTSW also serves as an academic center educating physicians, scientists, and healthcare professionals, there was also a need to serve this community with a space that would accelerate their training.

The solution

The William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital was planned and built with quality, safety, and efficiency as top priorities. The result is a facility where every detail contributes to enhanced patient care. The building was designed in a series of Vs, as a way of reducing the distances that caregivers must travel to reach patients on the patient care floors, and the overall layout allows for simpler wayfinding and collaboration between colleagues.

Floor colouring was also introduced to reduce the risk of accidents and making items dropped easier to spot. A sophisticated air filtration system that provides fresher, cleaner air throughout the hospital was also built, helping to reduce the risk of infections. Additionally, the hospital features specialized water treatment systems, which also work to reduce the spread of illness.

The impact

The 12-story facility expansion provided 292 new inpatient beds, bringing the total number to 752 beds. 19 new operating rooms were also built.

The hospital has received a national Vizient Rising Star Award for its quality and safety efforts, being recognized as the most patient-centered academic medical center, as well as among the top 10 institutions in diminished mortality rates in the country on the Vizient Scorecard, a national database that includes 95% of academic medical centers in the U.S. and Canada.

The expansion continues UT Southwestern’s legacy as one of the leading academic medical centers, patient-care providers and research institutions in the nation, while maintaining William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital’s state-of-the-art design, technology integration and operational efficiency.
