The challenge
The road infrastructure in and around Vlissingen was not designed to cope with a new business park.
The road infrastructure in and around Vlissingen was not designed to cope with a new business park.
Arcadis worked with the municipality during the implementation phase of the project to open up the A58 highway at Vlissingen.
Traffic now flows smoothly to the business park and safer routes have been created for train passengers and cyclists.
The development of the new Souburg II business park and the planned redevelopment of the Kenniswerf hub mean increased activity in and around Vlissingen. However, the existing infrastructure was not capable of handling the expected traffic congestion.
Improving routes to the new business park meant improving access to the A58 via Poortersweg. In addition, a large roundabout was upgraded to handle heavy transport and the cycle path was separated from the roadways. This was a big job with a certain amount of time pressure, because the redevelopment had to be complete in time for the opening of Souburg II. However, the municipality of Vlissingen and stakeholders, including the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management and the water authority, made careful preparations. Arcadis was involved in this phase of the implementation, which included the construction phases and closures. On behalf of the municipality, we drew up the preliminary traffic design, the final civil engineering design and the specifications in accordance with the RAW (rationalization and automation of civil engineering) system, including drawings for the access to the business park. We also worked with the municipality to handle the entire tender and procurement process.
Combining several disciplines into a single contract allowed for an integrated approach, so the project could be carried out smoothly and efficiently. The work was completed in good time and with limited traffic disruption.
Thanks to the successful opening up of the A58 at Vlissingen, traffic now flows smoothly and safely to the new business park and it is easier for people to travel within and around the area. The new design also makes both the railway station and the external and internal ports more easily accessible. The new cycle tunnel separates fast and slow traffic, making the traffic situation clearer and safer for all road users. Furthermore, the new business park also provides additional employment opportunities for people.
