The challenge

A leading pharmaceutical manufacturer was in the process of creating their large-scale EMEA viral vector production facility in the Netherlands. Through this new facility, the client aimed to enhance their cell therapy approach to treat cancer patients more effectively via 'Chimeric Antigen Receptor' T-cell (CAR-T) therapy. CAR-T therapy is a specific form of cell therapy in which CAR-T cells are engineered to destroy cancer cells that express a specific antigen. This personalized therapeutic treatment can boost a patient’s immune system and increase their prospects.

The solution

We supported the client in creating a new facility to increase production of viral vectors in-house and create a stable and controlled supply chain for its own CAR-T program. Our services included full design activities for the new Viral Vector facility and an enhanced execution schedule to bring this new life saving treatment to the market.

The new facility comprised the development of an existing fallow building shell to a state-of-the-art production center including 3 production trains, with flexibility to implement future trains, cell culture and purification suites, as well as sterile isolated fill and freeze and support systems such as media and buffer preparation, clean utilities, and bio-kill systems.

The impact

The new viral vector manufacturing facility was designed and built in record time, meeting the client’s expectations and tight deadlines. Thanks to this new facility, the client has ensured a stable supply chain for its life-saving CAR-T therapies program, gained the ability to fully automate electronic batch records (EBR) and manufacturing execution systems (MES).

Most importantly, one of the client’s key goals to operate CO2 neutral by 2025 is now attainable as the project incorporated best-in-class environmental, health and safety (EHS) and sustainability protocols.
