Arcadis to provide engineering services for five storm surge barriers

Arcadis has been commissioned by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management for Western Netherlands South to provide engineering services for five storm surge barriers in South Holland. Over the next four years, Arcadis will help supervise the maintenance of the Maeslant Barrier, the Hartel Barrier, the Hollandsche IJssel Barrier, the Haringvliet Locks, and the Volkerak Locks, among other things. There will be a turnover of around 6.5 million euros for the whole period. The contract may also be extended twice, for two years each time.

As part of this commission, Arcadis will draw up a number of contracts for renovation work and oversee the management of the contracts. Arcadis's hydraulic engineering specialists will help the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management to maintain the barriers, addressing issues such as quality assurance, risk management and planning. Arcadis will act as a fixed point of contact for the Ministry's project team, helping them to come up with efficient ways of working together.

'With this contract, our client has consolidated all the separate contracts that were previously covered by the framework agreement for engineering services into a single project,' says Arcadis project director Wolter Seinen. 'In this new contract, Arcadis will help to coordinate the operations that take place on storm surge barriers. The great thing about this is that, as an international engineering organization, we can also share the knowledge and expertise we will gain with our colleagues worldwide.'
