Highlands Ranch, Colo., Feb. 3, 2021 – Arcadis has signed an agreement with environmental solutions provider Tomorrow Water to evaluate and develop CoFlow, Tomorrow Water’s patented process for co-locating data centers with wastewater treatment plants to improve sustainability and economics.
CoFlow integrates a wastewater treatment plant and a data center on a single plot of land, linking the energy and fluid streams of both facilities. Process intensification coupled with innovative water-cooling reduces water consumption and energy and lifecycle costs. CoFlow also enables data centers to be built on top of the existing treatment infrastructure, further reducing the resources needed to build data centers.
“Data centers and technology are rapidly scaling to meet the evolving needs of all industries, despite growing water scarcity concerns. CoFlow creates a sustainable solution to meet growing water demand for data centers” said James Cooper, global director of water optimization at Arcadis
Arcadis works with communities and companies to design sustainable water solutions, data centers and other critical infrastructure. As part of the agreement, Arcadis will conduct a technical and economic evaluation of the CoFlow concept and process patents. Once the evaluation is complete, Arcadis and Tomorrow Water will develop the first CoFlow projects in the U.S.
“This is an exciting collaboration between two companies that are aligned by their purpose. Reimagining efficiency models for vital infrastructure such as data centers and wastewater treatment plants is just one way we will contribute to safeguarding the environment for future,” said Anthony Dusovic, COO of Tomorrow Water.
“Co-locating data centers and wastewater reclamation plants will help reduce wastewater discharges, offset potable water demand and offer triple-bottom-line benefits to water-stressed regions,” said Ufuk Erdal, senior vice president and water reuse director at Arcadis.
In 2020, Arcadis launched a three-year strategy centered around sustainability and sustainable solutions. This partnership with Tomorrow Water is instrumental in fulfilling that commitment, across the energy, water and technology sectors.
