As consumer demand for goods increases across Belgium, so to does the number of journeys lorries need to make to deliver goods. All of these trucks add to traffic on roadways and also produce emissions that are harmful to the environment and people’s health. Transporting these good via waterways is a more sustainable alternative to trucks, but the most important inland waterway in Flanders, the Albert Canal, doesn’t currently have enough capacity.

To address this problem, Arcadis is supporting Flemish Waterway (de Vlaamse Waterweg NV) in raising the height of 31 bridges over the Albert Canal. This will allow ships to move through the canal with more shipping containers on board. Watch this video to learn more about this project.
