Project Management and Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) services for the airport expansion, including best practices and international experience
Mobility improvement: expansion of airport handling capacity from 25 to 60 million passengers per year
Passenger numbers were expected to increase immensely on account of two major sports events hosted in Brazil; the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games. To accommodate the increasing passenger expectation the Brazilian Federal Government launched an infrastructure investment program. Part of this program was the expansion of Guarulhos International Airport, the largest and most important hub in Brazil.
In Brazil it is custom to award airport concessions. In 2012 the concessionaire GRU Airport won the right to operate the Guarulhos International Airport for the coming twenty years. Part of the deal was to complete the first phase of the redevelopment project, including a new terminal with around 200,000 sqm, within two years.
The new terminal T3 was to increase the airport handling capacity from 25 million to 60 million passengers a year. The scope included improving parking lots, runway, yards and access roads. As the previously developed detailed design for the new terminal did not meet the requirements of the just appointed concessionaire, a new project was initiated, leading to the adoption of the fast-track strategy. This meant organizing the work in parallel phases and starting construction before final designs were complete.
Our team, reaching 125 active professionals at the projects peak, was responsible for providing Project Management, Phased Planning, Procurement, Construction Supervision, Detailed Design Certification, Quality Control, Health and Safety, Environmental Control. Adding to that, Arcadis brought its world class experience in ORAT - Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer services onto the project.
The new terminal T3 opened its door to the world at the expected time, having reached its goal to more than doubling its capacity: from 25 million to 60 million passengers a year. The airport now includes strong sustainability features like the use of natural daylight, the reuse of water and a general reduced power consumption. Arcadis guaranteed the delivery of the largest international passenger terminal in Brazil in record time and at the quality level our client expected.
